Debt Prevention and Management
Is your checking account empty or overdrawn by the end of
each month? Do you have any idea where all the money
went? With the condition of our current economy it is
more important than ever to keep track of every cent we
spend. This can be done by creating a budget. Major
companies, small businesses, restaurants, all work within a
budget. They are a helpful tool in debt prevention and
management.
Any financially successful person you may know is in charge of
their money and knows exactly where every penny is going.
They are in complete financial control in spite of economic
hard times. As a result, they are a success at debt
prevention and management.
The average person can also become successful at debt
prevention and management. It is as simple as making a
list. When creating a budget make list of all income
expected during the month and all the bills that will be
required to be paid. This should be updated or at least
looked at on a daily basis. There are some items that
will need to be estimated. Estimated items would be the
groceries, car fuel, gifts, dining out and possible medical
emergencies, etc. Anticipate if there may be a special
event or celebration coming up. This is the first step in
gaining control of your finances and living within your
means.
Utilize Resources Available To Help Manage Your
Money
Make your computer work for you. There are many
programs available to help manage your money. Most banks
allow access to your accounts online. Watch your accounts
carefully. Simple addition or subtraction errors in your
checkbook can be caught early. Overdrafts can be costly
and add up quickly.
To be a financially successful individual takes
discipline. Avoid using credit cards or dining out as much as
possible. Check the interest rate on your home mortgage
or credit cards. Consider working out a consumer
credit counseling debt management plan. It may be
beneficial to renegotiate your loan down to a lower interest
rate making your monthly payment lower. If that is the
case, you may be able to make larger payments toward your
principal and pay off your mortgage early. It also may be
possible to transfer the current charges on your credit card to
another card that is offering a lower rate. Be very
mindful of the fees for these transfers. The cost of
making these changes could be problematic and not cost
effective.
